Academic test scores exceed the California statewide average by more than 100 points Santa Monica Malibu easily surpasses California’s benchmark of excellence, with students from every ethnic and socioeconomic subgroup doing significantly better than their statewide counterparts.

Nearly 60% of teachers hold a masters’ degree or doctorate, compared with just 39% in Los Angeles County or 35% statewide. Our District is a national leader in teachers certified by the prestigious National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

The top colleges and universities in the nation seek out Santa Monica and Malibu graduates. Each year more than 60 students attend U.C. Berkeley and UCLA. Malibu and Santa Monica High Schools offer 31 different Advanced Placement (AP) courses, more than many private schools. Student participation and performance in AP has risen dramatically in the last five years.

The 132-year-old school system is the oldest public institution in Santa Monica, and Santa Monica and Malibu schools predate the establishment of their city governments. At the same time, Santa Monica and Malibu schools reflect the diversity of its two cities.

100% of elementary students study music from 3rd to 5th grade, with nearly 40% continuing through high school. Middle and high school orchestras, bands and choirs consistently achieve Superior ratings at festivals and competitions and have performed all over the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Rudolphinium in Prague and Disney Concert Hall.

The highly acclaimed dual-immersion program at Edison Language Academy begins one of only 11 K-12 dual language immersion programs nationwide. Santa Monica and Malibu schools also offer a Marine Science elementary school at Pt. Dume and a science magnet at John Adams Middle School.
